In 2005, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon made a surprise turnaround in a career known for nationalism and military strength by promoting a "disengagement" of Israeli civilian and military personnel from the Gaza Strip and northern Samaria. With a majority vote in the Knesset and the approval of the Supreme Court, the decision to evacuate almost 10,000 residents, demolish 21 communities, transferring these strategic districts into the hands of Hamas remains one of Israel's greatest military blunders. The majority of the evacuated residents were Orthodox Jews. I expressed my support for the doomed communities through these postcards.
