This is the 111th Street station on the 7 local train, located in the Corona neighborhood of Queens. It is located within proximity to the New York Hall of Science, a major tourist and educational destination. This Arts for Transit proposal intends to show the station as a gateway to the Hall of Science, improve the station's condition, and show the neighborhood's pride in this landmark building.
The diamond-shaped metal columns on the left hold the elevated express track. My proposal would fill in the diamond shapes with stained glass bricks similar to those on the New York Hall of Science's Great Hall, pictured on the left. This would remind visitors that this station is home to the Hall of Science. The stained glass would be contained in thick, reinforced concrete that would withstand the vibration of passing trains. This "Science City" artwork should attract more visitors to the neighborhood and add to the growing collection of public artworks in the subway system.
