My grandmother's brother Semyon Brodsky lived across the street from her and hosted my family when we arrived in America. He is also a veteran of the Second World War. In January 2010, Semyon was killed crossing a street in Queens. This portrait illustrated important moments in his life. His name is written in English, Russian, and Hebrew, the 3 languages of his life.
Semyon loved chess. The two bishops are his children, born in 1948 and 1953. The two horses are his grandchildren, born in 1971 and 1981. He was married in 1948. With his wife Fira, he arrived in America in 1989, but he was born in Romania, as shown by the flag. It was a poor prewar shtetl, as shown by the silhouette above the chess board. The outline of the Western Wall and his Hebrew name signify his visit to Israel and religious commitment. The Soviet war medals testify to his heroism during the war.
